The university’s governing council has invited Governor Acharya Devvrat to serve as its new Chancellor. The decision was made after Chancellor Ela Bhatt tendered her resignation.

What is Gujarat Vidyapeeth?

Gujarat Vidyapeeth is a national university that offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs. Its mission is to promote education based on Indian values and culture. Its goal is to produce well-rounded students who can think critically and solve problems in today’s world.

Gandhiji established the Vidyapeeth to liberate young people from British colonial influences and prepare them for the task of national reconstruction and ushering in ‘Hind Swaraj,’ the India of his dream. He was instrumental in creating the institution independent of government influence and named professor A T Gidwani as its founder vice-chancellor. Several prominent Gandhians such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, and Morarji Desai served as its chancellors.

Its academic buildings feature a tree-filled courtyard, Corinthian capitals over columns, and gated entrances. During the civil disobedience movement of 1930 to 1935 and the Quit India Movement of 1942 to 1945, students and staff members actively participated in India’s independence struggle.

What is the Governing Council of Gujarat Vidyapeeth?

AHMEDABAD: The governing council of Gujarat Vidyapith — the world-renowned Gandhian university founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920 — has accepted the resignation of its current Chancellor, Ela Bhatt, and decided to invite Governor Acharya Devvrat to take over as the university’s new Chancellor. The council will send a delegation to the state capital to invite him, according to a statement from the university’s spokesman, Nikhil Bhatt. The governing council’s decision came after a meeting that lasted for four hours and featured tense, sometimes edgy exchanges between members.

Nine prominent Gandhians resigned from their positions as trustees to oppose the appointment of Devvrat, who has an RSS background. They said that the saffron brigade was trying to take over Gandhian institutions in an attempt to “erase and alter history”. The trustees who resigned include Narsinhbhai Hathila, Mandaben Parikh, Sudarshan Iyangar, Michael Mazgaonkar, Kapil Shah, Neetaben Hardikar, Chaitanya Bhatt, and Dr Ramlal Patel. Their joint statement read: “Gandhi established the Gujarat Vidyapith for attachment to independence. The ideals of independence should not be replaced by devotion to self-liberation and knowledge, but rather by service to the country and its villages.”

What is the Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapeeth?

The Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapeeth is an important position in the Gandhian institution. Mahatma Gandhi was its founding Chancellor until his death, and stalwarts like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, and Morarji Desai served as the institute’s Chancellor after him.

The trustees of the Gujarat Vidyapeeth have decided to invite Governor Acharya Devvrat to take over as its Chancellor. The decision comes after the resignation of 89-year-old noted Gandhian and founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Ela Bhatt, who resigned from the post earlier this month due to health concerns.

Bhatt’s resignation was accepted by the governing council of Gujarat Vidyapeeth after a detailed discussion. The Ahmedabad-based deemed university said that it would honor Bhatt’s feelings and “respect her decision.” In the same meeting, it was also decided to invite the Governor to the university for a function to celebrate its contributions to Indian education and culture. The event will be held in October.

What is the Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapeeth?

Gandhian values of non-violence and self-reliance remain a core philosophy of this prestigious university. It is a renowned center for cultural studies and traditional forms of art like painting, music, and literature. It also provides career opportunities for young people in Rajkot through organized skill training programs and affordable education. In addition to this, the university conducts medical clinics in rural locations and offers scholarships to students who are in financial need.

The governing council of Gujarat Vidyapeeth appointed Governor Acharya Devvrat as its next chancellor on October 4. He replaces Ela Bhatt, who resigned due to her age. Previous chancellors of the 102-year-old deemed university include Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad, and Morarji Desai. In the future, the university will continue to focus on Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals of Truth and Nonviolence, and will strive to remove social inequality and untouchability. It will also promote the spinning wheel and encourage the use of hand-spun, hand-woven Khadi.
